The venue was located inside a former factory in an isolated stretch of the West Loop neighborhood. The club was called The Warehouse, a location that would go on to become the birthplace of house music and an official Chicago landmark. House, perhaps more than any other form of Black music, has birthed many offshoots and spread its sound far and wide. The prevalence of four on the floor beats in dance music is largely derived from house. Frank Lloyd Wright's Prairie School influenced both building design and the design of furnishings. In the early half of the 20th century, popular residential neighborhoods were developed with Chicago Bungalow style houses, many of which still exist.

The two-flat apartment building, along with the larger three- and six-flat buildings, make up 30% of Chicago's housing stock.[13] A two-flat includes two apartments, each of which occupies a full floor, usually with a large bay window and with a grey stone or red brick facade. The apartments typically have the same layout with a large living and dining room area at the front, the kitchen at the back and the bedrooms running down one side of the unit. Today, this National Historic Landmark serves as the headquarters of the Society of Architectural Historians, which conducts guided tours of the house and museum. The Chicago House Music Festival and Conference—the genre born in Chicago that has gone on to revolutionize dance music internationally.

These elements are often used to create a thumping 4/4 beat, as well as intricate percussion patterns. In addition, the sound typically utilizes soulful vocal samples or live vocals in order to give the track an extra layer of emotion and expression. While there are many different theories about the origins of house music, most experts agree that the Chicago house scene was one of the earliest and most influential scenes in dance music history. Chicago house music is one of the oldest and most influential electronic dance music styles. Produced by Rick Siepak on therelatively short-lived Chicago label Sound Pak and featuring the vocals oflabel regular Charles Steward, ‘Night Moves’ is something of a little-knownanomaly.

House was going on in Chicago for awhile before anyone with big money really picked up on it. The record industry (then in the process of consolidating in Los Angeles) really had no fucking clue what was happening here, and even less what to do with it when they got wise. An in-depth one on one interview with veteran dance music executive and founder of Ultra Records, dance music's leading electronic music label since 1995, which partnered Sony Music in 2012. Shortly after leaving Ultra, Patrick launched a new partnership with Warner Brothers Music, taking over hip-hop indie label PayDay Records and creating a new dance music record label called Helix Records.

Reissued on Trax under lead vocalist Robert Owens's name, suchwas its naïve power that you could almost believe it held the wrecking-ballpotential its title suggested. The walls it referred to were described to thiswriter by Owens as “the blocks of negativity and separation in society, mainlythe ones found in the urban environment in which it was written” , a messagewhich chimed with high-as-a-kite but idealistic UK audiences. Acid house arose from Chicago artists' experiments with the squelchy Roland TB-303 bass synthesizer, and the style's earliest release on vinyl is generally cited as Phuture's "Acid Tracks" (1987). Hardy once played it four times over the course of an evening until the crowd responded favorably.[21] The track also utilized a Roland TR-707 drum machine. Some of these DJs also made and played their own edits of their favorite songs on reel-to-reel tape, focusing on the portions of songs which worked well on the dancefloor. Some even mixed in effects, drum machines, and other rhythmic electronic instrumentation in an effort to give songs more appeal.

Throughout the track, 19-year-old Adonis whispers, "release my soul / I’ve lost control / too far gone / ain’t no way back", detailing his inner dystopian thoughts on the dancefloor. This track is both soul reincarnating and downright frightening with its minimalistic, monotone approach. As a future pioneer of our beloved acid house, we’re not sure if Adonis ever quite made it back. A track full of subtlety with afoundation of blistering piano runs to banging drum hits and topped with ascreaming Darryl Pandy.

Ron Hardy was a DJ and producer who was instrumental in the development of the Chicago house scene. Returning to for its 20th anniversary summer season, the 2024 Chicago House Music Festival will take to Millennium Park on Sunday, June 2nd from 10 a.m. You know, when you really listen to the range of what is in house, like musically, sonically, but also in the lyrics, you know, it is telling stories of love. In 1984, Vince and his friend Jesse Saunders made a song called "On & On" that many consider the first real house record. “Since the Israel-Gaza war began, journalists have been paying the highest price — their lives — to defend our right to the truth.

'Journey With The Lonely' is a highly accomplished mix ofstreet smart, sass, innovation and soul. The perfectopener to a musical odyssey which, hands down, remains one of the greatest housealbums ever made. Farley surpassed flatmate SteveHurley with their competing versions of Isaac Hayes 'I Can't Turn Around' but,in early 1987, Hurley's 'Jack Your Body' became house music's first UK popnumber one.

According to a preliminary investigation released Friday by the Committee to Protect Journalists, nearly 100 journalists have been killed covering the war in Gaza. And anytrack that contains the line “For a chance to see you smile, I would wrestlecrocodiles” but still be great, must have a little something about it. The pair had spent endless nightsexperimenting at Kevin Saunderson's studio in Detroit, where Damier had beenworking as manager of the influential Music Institute club and prior tostriking out on their own they released a couple of singles on Saunderson's KMSimprint. With its layers of keys, soulful vocal, muscular percussion and a basssound more akin to those found in dub reggae, this stunning debut pointed towhere they were going and would soon be reissued, minus the great vocal, ontheir own label. From the most fundamental of early building blocks to the trippiest of disco house, but minus overtly acid tracks (save one we couldn’t resist) or deep house fare, here's our pick of 30 bona fide Chicago house classics.

Built in the late-19th century, the Richard H. Driehaus Museum (aka the Nickerson Mansion) defies imagination. Marble floors, grand staircases, ornate decorative arts, imposing fireplaces, and antique furnishings are dazzling expressions of the museum’s commitment to preserving and exploring art, architecture, and design of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The meticulously restored “Marble Palace,” as it came to be known, also hosts rotating exhibits focused on the Gilded Age.

Hocus Pocus Park

Owned by the Peabody Essex Museum and known as Ropes Mansion, this opulent residence resumes house tours on July 24 and continues weekends through October 30. For an added bonus, check out the gorgeous Colonial Revival garden located in the back to get some gardening inspiration. The place where Winifred belted out the iconic tune "I Put a Spell on You" is called Old Town Hall.

New England destinations are 'going all in' on Halloween, according to Thrillist

As an added bonus, this park is where many of the outdoor "school" shots were filmed, allowing you to relive more of your favorite scenes as you gaze upon the building. The famous house where Allison and Max foolishly opened the Sanderson Sisters' spell book is an actual private residence. According to Zillow, the home was built in 1870 and is estimated to be worth over $520,000 today. While the home remains closed to the public, Boston.com reports that the current owners are actually very nice about tourists stopping to take photos. Considering all the locations the story takes place and how amazing the cinematography is, it’s easy to think that Max, Dani, Allison and Binx’s world would be filmed on various studio lots in Los Angeles, California.

Max and Dani trick-or-treat at the Ropes Mansion in "Hocus Pocus."

In December 2021, the locals were warned about the upcoming out-of-season Halloween decor that would hit the town due to the film’s crews. Although the house is privately owned, hardcore fans have been known to take a photo or two in front of the boo-tiful abode. Known as the Ropes Mansion, the historic structure was built back in the 18th century (1727), and has served as home to three generations of the Ropes family, after being purchased by Judge Nathaniel Ropes, Jr. in 1768. Since Salem’s Pioneer Village is a museum, visitors are encouraged to explore. The classic Halloween film that started it all was released almost three decades ago. The much-anticipated sequel to the popular 1993 film has us eagerly embracing our inner witch vibes.

I visited Salem to tour iconic locations from 'Hocus Pocus' and they looked exactly like they did in the movie

That concludes my tour of the LA shooting locations from Hocus Pocus. If you know of any additional filming locations throughout the Los Angeles area, please drop a comment below. The last location on our list is the Warner Bros Ranch studio lot. Getting to step foot onto this set is a very SPECIAL experience.

But it turns out, director Kenny Ortega also took a different route by heading to the exact New England location where the story is set. If you’re interested in taking a mini-tour through where Hocus Pocus was filmed 29 years ago, then you’ve come to the right spooky place. It's a two-story house that claims to be "the only structure you can visit in Salem with direct ties to the Salem witch trials of 1692." It is said to have served as the home of Jonathan Corwin, a judge in the trials. Today, it's a museum where visitors can get a snapshot of 17th-century life. Photos of the home reveal detailed interiors decorated with tons of candles, potions, overgrown ivy, a huge dry-ice-filled cauldron, and antique furnishings.

According to The Providence Journal, residents of Rhode Island welcomed the infamous witches to town. And to plan your trip, visit the official website of the historic museum. At the beginning of the classic ’90s film, viewers get a glimpse of the 17th-century Salem witch trials.

Founded in 1638, Old Burial Hill Cemetery is located just south of Salem in Marblehead, Massachusetts. This historic burial ground is where Max first runs into the quintessential ‘90s bullies Jay and Ernie (“Ice”). Though most of the nighttime scenes were filmed on a soundstage, the daytime scenes were shot on location and you can still find some of the tombstones featured in the movie.

Don't worry, though; nobody there is out to kill any witches or students of the macabre that come to visit. Yes, you can see the real-life location where the Sanderson Sisters were resurrected—if you dare! This private residence located at 4 Ocean Ave in Salem dates all the way back to 1870. Visitors probably shouldn't go knocking, but you can take a stroll by the house and admire its iconic exterior. In real life, the building was formerly Phillips Elementary School on South Washington Square in Salem. It was no longer being used at the time of filming, so it was easy for them to shoot scenes there.

The opening scene set in 1600s Salem

Back at the cemetery, Billy catches up to the children and cuts open his stitched mouth with Max's knife, and joins the children against the witches after revealing his hatred of Winifred. The witches snatch Dani back after attacking the children from the air, and Winifred attempts to use their last vial of potion to suck out Dani's life force. Binx manages to knock the potion out of Winifred's hand, and Max catches the potion and drinks it, forcing the witches to take him instead of Dani. Hocus Pocus 2 did not disappoint with its stunning visuals and vibrant scenery. Many of the scenes in the film's sequel took place at the local high school in Salem—but were actually shot at La Salle Academy, a private preparatory school in Providence, Rhode Island.

Visit Santa Cruz County works to enhance tourism, the visitor experience, and the area economy by positioning and promoting Santa Cruz County as a year-around visitor, conference and film destination. The Old Town Hall is the site of the epic Halloween party in which Better Midler sings "I Put A Spell on You" while doing just that to the clueless guests in attendance. The oldest surviving municipal structure in the city is still a public hall, hosting farmers markets, fashion shows, fundraisers, parties, weddings, and more. But its popularity stems from the scene in Hocus Pocus when Max rides his bicycle through the cemetery. Visitors can relive the party scene where the rich people gathered for Halloween.

It also offers a picturesque view of the town, and is open to the public. In addition, the guests will enjoy a special screening of “Hocus Pocus 2” and have the opportunity to explore the city of Salem. The Hocus Pocus house doesn’t have a full bathroom, but there’s an outhouse located within steps of the cottage. The cottage the Sanderson sisters lived in is an actual house in Danvers, Mass.

Later in the movie, it serves as the backdrop for a good chunk of the climax when Max, Dani, and Allison square off against the Sanderson sisters. While I stopped for a picture and a selfie, I was very self-conscious the whole time because it was a residential neighborhood. Anyone visiting should be respectful to those living in this community. While the front of the house was crowded, I had the big garden to myself. While I was already excited to "visit" Allison's house, the garden left me speechless and is a must-visit for tourists.

As it wasn't October, Halloween month, yet and it was in the middle of the week, I felt like I had the town to myself. It wasn't crowded and there was no wait time to get into any of the socially-distanced attractions like the Witch House. It did get more crowded as we got closer to the weekend, so that is something to keep in mind if you're trying to avoid that. The gorgeous fall colors from the movie were missing from the park during my trip. The Salem Common park is a public park which is about a 10-minute walk from the Old Town Hall. In "Hocus Pocus," there's a memorable scene of the Sanderson sisters riding their brooms in the night sky that I envisioned as I stood looking at the harbor.

The two-person reservation at the cottage will be on Thursday, Oct. 20, for just $31. Built in 1930 to mark the tercentennial of Massachusetts, Pioneer Village is America’s first living history museum. One year before Max, Dani, and Binx captured the Sanderson Sisters inside the red-brick building, Phillips Elementary stopped functioning as a school.

Built in 1930, the first living history museum in the U.S. is home to dugouts, wigwams, thatched roof cottages, medicinal gardens, and a blacksmith shop. A couple of years ago, I came across a Whittier Daily News article that chronicled the various filming that had taken place in the city over the years. Unlike some of the locations on this list, it's easy to visit the venue, though we're sad to say you're not likely to find a party there. The scene was originally filmed in Salem's Town Hall, which is now simply referred to as Old Town Hall.

They work closely with the product manager, incorporating user feedback and insights to create a product that not only solves the users’ problems but also delights them. Product teams collect user feedback during the testing phase in continuous product design. This feedback is critical as it is used to refine and improve the product before its final launch. Consider the product as a complex project and the customers as the end-users. This feedback is then utilized by the product team to refine and enhance the project over time.

Netflix's continuous improvements based on user feedback

As interface designers, they also highlight the features that customers care the most about. These products will lack the opportunity to collect customer ideas and iterate with new ideas. Also, the prototype process is important for flushing out design problems inside the potential solutions. In the prototype stage, you select a possible solution and create a potential draft version. This allows you an opportunity to test your project against customer feedback before you go through with development.

User research in continuous product design plays a crucial role in directing a more profound comprehension of customer needs, preferences, and challenges. Through continuous research, designers can gain comprehensive insights into customer behavior and make informed product decisions throughout the development lifecycle. User research allows teams to examine their users closely and understand their needs and wants. Prototyping is where ideas take form and immediate feedback can be gathered.

Effective communication and collaboration among teams

This agility enables companies to bring new features and updates to market quickly, gaining an edge over competitors and capturing early adopters. The core idea behind CPD lies in incorporating user-centric design principles and making them an integral part of the entire product development lifecycle. From ideation to implementation and beyond, CPD ensures that customer feedback is actively sought and used to inform design decisions at every stage. The iterative nature of Continuous Product Design enables teams to release smaller, more frequent updates. This not only allows for quicker response to user feedback but also facilitates a culture of continuous improvement.

Gathering user feedback and conducting user research

Insights should be stored somewhere that is transparent, easily accessible and regularly curated and evaluated by the team. Adopting agile development methodologies allows teams to work in iterative cycles and respond quickly to changing requirements. Integration of DevOps practices streamlines product development, facilitating seamless collaboration and efficient delivery. Conduct thorough market research to identify gaps, trends, and opportunities in the market. Gather feedback from customers to understand their needs, preferences, and pain points, which can guide product development efforts.

How to get started with continuous product discovery

Embrace an iterative process, incorporating feedback and making continuous improvements. As successes accrue, gradually expand the scope of application across your product portfolio. Leveraging data analytics and conducting A/B tests help validate hypotheses, identify trends, and optimize product features based on real user interactions. By rapidly iterating and incorporating user feedback, continuous product design shortens development cycles.

Successful customer-centric product designs are akin to well-executed custom orders. They are precise and efficient because they were developed with the specific requirements and preferences of the user in mind. Companies like Osprey and Apple have distinguished themselves by consistently delivering products that meet their customers’ needs and expectations. A constant emphasis on the customer at every stage of the product design process. By embracing continuous design, teams optimize user experiences and product functionality. It's vital to cultivate a culture of experimentation and flexibility within the organization.

Their agile response to market changes is a testament to the power of continuous product design and showcases the importance of adaptability in today’s dynamic marketplace. Release processes were slower and customer feedback only occurred in the final phases of development. System designers are also responsible for organizing placement of the important features within the product. The system designer handles categories, optimization and organization of the information.

These activities have different organisational sponsors, cross-functional partners, funding mechanisms, and levels of visibility in the organisation. Falling behind on any one of these goals will compromise the success of the others. This requires digital designers to let go of the perfectionist mindset we have inherited from our parent disciplines of graphic and industrial design.

This commitment to continuous improvement ensures that their product remains a classic while also meeting the changing needs of consumers. A case study can provide invaluable insights into the real-world applications of continuous product design. By looking at examples of how successful businesses implement this approach, we can better understand its benefits and learn how to apply it in our organizations. A/B testing is a critical tool used to compare two versions of a product or feature to determine which performs better based on user feedback. This tool and analytics provide valuable insights that help businesses make informed decisions about their product roadmap, allowing for continual optimization of their product design.

Breaking down silos between design, development, and other departments is a fundamental aspect of continuous product design. Cross-functional collaboration ensures that diverse perspectives contribute to the product's evolution, resulting in a more holistic and well-rounded solution. Not only should businesses focus on perfecting their current products, but they should also be forward-thinking, predicting future trends and customer needs. Kodak's downfall underscores the importance of product design in driving business success, reminding us that to avoid obsolescence, we must embrace evolution. In an era where consumer goods evolve at a breakneck pace, continuous product design and development are the heart and soul of industrial and product design.

This allows quick feedback gathering and design iteration before release. Here’s how to make this approach part of your company culture and workflow, step by step. Continuous product design enables businesses to adapt quickly to changes in the market caused by new technology, regulations, or consumer trends.
